Consolation Prize

Recently, I through my hat in the ring to run for mayor of my little city. I got out and knocked on doors, kissed babies, and shook plenty of hands.

In the end, the citizens chose the incumbent.

In the days following, people offered words of consolation, plenty of "shoulda, coulda, woulda" and lots of pats on the back.

What impressed me most, however, was the gift of farm fresh eggs that arrived at the store with a hug. A better consolation prize I could not have received.
